There is no project we'd rather lose than one we shouldn't have taken. This page exists so you can decide before we ever talk — and so we can point you somewhere better when Icon isn't the right answer.
Icon is for you if…
We are the right partner for homeowners investing in a substantial, design-build remodel across greater Chicagoland and southeast Wisconsin. Specifically:
Icon is for you if you…
- Are taking on a substantial remodel — a kitchen or bath to the studs, a whole-home renovation, a finished lower level, or an addition — designed and built by one accountable team
- Want a true partner, not a vendor — you value education, transparency, and a relationship that lasts long after the final invoice
- Are willing to invest the time in a real design and selection process before demolition begins — great remodels start with great conversations
- Want fixed-price certainty tied to a complete specification, not a cost-plus arrangement that puts budget risk on you
- Value craft that holds up on the largest, most complex work — and a firm still answering your call ten years on
- Live in Lake, Cook, McHenry, or DuPage County in Illinois — or southeastern Wisconsin
Icon is probably not the right fit if…
We are not the right answer for every project — and we'd rather tell you that on this page than waste your time in a meeting that ends the same way. The most common reasons Icon is the wrong fit:
We're probably not the right fit if…
- You need a single trade — just new flooring, an interior paint job, a deck replacement, a roof. You need a specialty trade, not a design-build remodeler.
- Your project is a ground-up new home. That's our other division — Icon new construction — built for building from scratch.
- You want the lowest-bid, cost-plus model. Thin-spec cost-plus contracts produce lower upfront numbers and higher final ones. If that's how you want to manage risk, a cost-plus firm will serve you better.
- You need to be finished in a few weeks from first call. Our design and pre-construction phases come first, by design — we won't trade thoroughness for a rushed timeline.
- You want to take over a project another firm started. We build accountability from the first conversation, not mid-stream.
If we're not the right fit, here's who is.
We mean it when we say we'd rather point you somewhere better than waste your time. Below are straight recommendations by project type — these are firms and trades we've worked with, would hire ourselves, and trust to take care of you.
(flooring, paint, roofing, deck)

(cost-plus comfort)
(finished in weeks)
(plans complete, bid-ready)
None of these referrals carry a fee or commission to Icon. We make the introduction because we want you in the right hands — and because the families we serve at the scale we serve them deserve to know there are alternatives.
How to know if Icon is right for you.
Three questions worth sitting withWill this remodel still feel right in ten years? Do you want to know the team working in your home personally? Are you willing to invest in design before demolition begins? If you answered yes to all three, we should talk. If you answered no to any of them, the alternatives above will serve you better.
The most reliable signal isn't a quiz. It's the conversation itself. In 60 minutes of Discovery you will know whether we're the kind of people you want to build with — and we will know whether your project is the kind of work we should take on. If we don't think Icon is the right fit, we will say so in writing within five business days, and we'll point you toward whoever is.
Read our Founders' Letter to understand the standard we hold ourselves to. Read Why Partner with Icon for the five moves we make that other remodelers don't. Read The Real Cost Guide to see if our investment ranges align with your project. Then, if it still feels right, begin.
Still unsure? Let's talk.
A fifteen-minute phone call is enough to find out. No sales pitch, no pressure, no automated follow-up sequence. If we're the right fit, we'll schedule Discovery. If we're not, we'll tell you who is.
